Tiles (Summary)

The initial usage spike was due to the announcement of the mapping service to the development community, and not the regular usage by Wikipedia users. Once the initial interest subsided, the usage fell back to the expected pre-announcement levels.

Notes

  • From 2015-11-01 to 2015-11-10 stress-testing traffic made its way into this data; this has now been removed.
  • 'A' (2015-09-17): Maps launch announced
  • 'B' (2016-01-08): Maps launched on en.wikipedia.org
  • 'C' (2016-01-12): Maps launch on en.wikipedia.org reverted on the 9th; caches begin to clear
  • 'D' (2016-11-09): Pokemon Go fan site Pkget switched to using our tiles after getting blocked from tile.osm.org on 2016-11-08 (see T154717 for more details)

Total tiles by style

Currently there are two styles: OpenStreetMap (“osm”) and OSM with labels (“osm-intl”). After the announcement, most of the tiles served are osm-intl.

Data is displayed on a 30-day rolling window for performance reasons but the original data can be found in here

Note that you can select multiple zoom levels. Windows and Linux users can select additional zoom levels by holding the Ctrl key when selecting, while Mac users have to use the Cmd key.

This tab contains a count of the unique users of various Maps platforms, including:

The counts are sampled at a rate of 1% so they're not entirely accurate, but they are useful for gauging the difference in activity between each platform.

GeoHack feature usage

This tab contains feature usage for GeoHack, a Wikimedia interface to geographic data. The only feature currently being tracked is the opening of a page based around GeoHack, which makes it less-than-useful for comparisons with other interfaces or tools, but very useful for tracking variation in user behaviour.

Events are sampled at a rate of 1%.
